A cold planer rents for $300 to $3,000 a day depending on cutting width. A published public-agency contract rate for a 20 inch unit is $1,527 a day, $4,298 a week, or $11,556 a month, which is one of the few cold planer rates you can actually verify rather than guess at. Buying runs $28,000 for a compact planer to $990,000 for a full-lane milling machine. A skid-steer milling attachment, the cheapest way into this work, is $26,234 to $31,993 new.

Large milling machines are usually not rented as bare equipment. Above roughly four feet of cutting width, the market is subcontract milling: you hire a milling contractor who brings the machine, the operator, the ground crew and the trucks, and bills by the square yard or by the hour. If a yard quotes you a bare half-lane machine, ask what happens if a drum tooth holder breaks on your watch.

The compact band running from $28,000 to $434,500 looks like an error and is not. At the bottom you have a small self-propelled unit with a narrow drum. At the top you have a compact machine with full grade control, a loading conveyor, and a factory warranty. They are both called compact planers. Confirm the drum width, the horsepower and whether a conveyor is fitted before you compare two quotes.
What drives the price
Cutting width. The primary sort. Every class above scales with it.
Cutting depth per pass. A machine that removes four inches in one pass beats a machine that needs two passes, and the second machine is not half the price.
Conveyor. Machines with a discharge conveyor load trucks directly. Machines without one leave the millings on the ground for a loader to pick up, which means another machine and another operator. On any job over a few hundred square yards, the conveyor is not optional.
Grade and slope control. Required on anything with a thickness tolerance. Adds materially to both rental and purchase.
Drum configuration. Standard, fine-cut and micro-mill drums cut different textures. A fine-cut drum for a surface being left open to traffic is a different tool from a standard drum for a full-depth removal. Swapping drums is a shop job, not a field job.
The cost that is not the machine
Milling produces material, and material has to go somewhere. A single inch of milling across one lane mile generates roughly 500 to 600 tons of reclaimed asphalt pavement. That is 25 to 30 truckloads.
- Trucking. Usually the largest single line item after the machine. Millings are heavy and the haul distance sets the bill.
- Teeth. Genuinely consumable. A drum carries 100 to 200 conical bits, and abrasive aggregate or an unexpected concrete layer can strip a set in a shift. Bits run a few dollars each and a full change is a real cost. On rentals, ask who pays.
- Water. Milling drums need water spray for dust and heat. Somebody has to supply and refill it.
- Sweeping. The milled surface has to be swept before tack coat. Add a broom.
- Traffic control. On any public road this is a separate line item and can exceed the milling cost on short jobs.
Rent or buy
Against the verified $1,527 daily rate, a $434,500 compact machine breaks even at 285 days. Against the $11,556 monthly rate, roughly 38 months. Cold planers are specialist machines with high wear and high transport cost, and utilisation is what decides this. A general paving contractor who mills a handful of days per job is renting or subcontracting. A dedicated milling contractor with a truck fleet and a bit supply is buying.
The one clear buy is the skid-steer attachment. At around $30,000, if you already own a skid steer and do regular patch and utility-cut work, it replaces a $300 to $500 daily rental you were making four or five times a month. That pays back inside two seasons.
Getting a fair quote
Give the contractor or yard square yards, milling depth, and whether the material stays on site or hauls away. Then ask three things: is a conveyor fitted, who pays for teeth, and is trucking inside or outside the quoted number. Those three questions separate quotes that look far apart but are not, and quotes that look close and are not.
