Pile driver rental runs $1,200 to $4,000 a day, or more usefully $3,000 to $15,000 a week depending on hammer class. A compact hammer package is $3,000 to $5,500 a week, a mid-size variable-moment hammer is $6,000 to $9,500, and a high-frequency package is $10,000 to $15,000. Monthly packages run $8,000 to $25,000. Add $8,000 to $15,000 for rig mobilisation, which is a real line item people leave out of their first budget.

Pile driving is quoted weekly and monthly far more often than daily, because the setup cost dominates short jobs. If someone gives you a day rate, ask what mobilisation is on top of it before you compare it to anything.
The side grip is the cheap route
An excavator-mounted side grip vibratory unit is the budget entry point for sheet piling. It clamps to the pile from the side, uses your existing excavator as the carrier, and eliminates the crane and leads entirely. At $3,500 to $12,000 a month it undercuts a full rig by a wide margin. The constraint is pile length and excavator capacity: side grips work best on shorter sheets and lighter sections, and your excavator has to have the hydraulic flow and the stability to handle it.

Every price above is for the hammer, not the rig. A conventional pile driving setup also needs a crane or a dedicated pile rig, leads to guide the pile, a power pack for hydraulic hammers, and often a crane mat system for ground bearing. The hammer is frequently under half the total capital.
Hammer types and why they cost different amounts
Impact hammers drop or fire a ram onto the pile head. Simple, high driving force, and very noisy. They shed energy as ground vibration, which is the reason they are increasingly restricted in built-up areas.
Standard vibratory hammers use rotating eccentric weights to liquefy the soil around the pile so it sinks under weight. Fast in granular soil, poor in stiff clay. They start and stop through a resonance range, which is what shakes neighbouring structures.
Variable-moment hammers can change the eccentric moment while running, so they start and stop at zero amplitude and skip resonance entirely. That is what you are paying the mid-tier price for. On a site with adjacent buildings or a vibration monitoring requirement, it is not a luxury.
High-frequency hammers run above the frequency range that excites most structures and soils. The most expensive to rent and the reason urban sheet piling is possible at all next to occupied buildings.
What drives the cost
Soil. Sand and gravel drive quickly with vibration. Stiff clay resists it and may force an impact hammer or a pre-augered hole. Rock stops both and moves you to drilled shafts, which is a different trade with a different price.
Pile type and length. Sheet pile, H-pile, pipe pile and precast concrete each need different jaws, caps or clamps. Longer piles need taller leads or a crane with more boom, which escalates fast.
Site access and bearing. A pile rig is heavy and top-heavy. Soft ground means mats or a working platform, and that is a separate earthworks cost before a single pile goes in.
Vibration and noise limits. A permit condition restricting vibration can double your hammer cost by forcing you up to a high-frequency unit. Find this out at the permit stage, not at mobilisation.
Rent or buy, and the honest answer
Almost nobody outside a dedicated foundation contractor should own this equipment. A $175,000 mid hammer against a $22,000 monthly rental breaks even at eight months of continuous use, which sounds attractive until you count the carrier, the leads, the power pack, the maintenance and the specialist crew. Vibratory hammers are hard-service machines with expensive bearings and clamps, and a neglected one fails in the ground.
For most general contractors, subcontracting the piling to a firm that owns the rig and the expertise is cheaper than renting the hammer and learning on the job. Rent the hammer only if you already have the carrier, the crew and the experience, and use a side grip if your piles are short enough to allow it.
Getting a fair quote
Bring the geotechnical report. A piling quote without soil data is a guess and will be priced defensively. Then state pile type, section, length, count, and any vibration or noise restriction on the permit. Ask what mobilisation and demobilisation cost, whether the quote includes an operator, what happens on refusal, and who pays for a pile that has to be extracted and redriven.
