The federal district spread of $2.62 to $24.27 per cubic yard is the most useful line here, because it is the same category of work, priced by the same agency, varying by a factor of nine purely on location and conditions. Anyone who quotes you a single national dredging price is not describing your job.

Why volume changes the price so much

Dredging has an enormous fixed cost and a modest variable cost. Mobilising a large dredge to a site can run $2.5 million on a major project. That cost is the same whether you remove 100,000 cubic yards or 2 million.

Spread $2.5 million across 2 million cubic yards and mobilisation adds $1.25 per yard. Spread it across 100,000 yards and it adds $25 per yard. This is the entire reason harbour work costs $6 and your pond costs $40.

It also means that on any project, the single most effective cost lever is doing more of it at once. Two small dredging jobs a year apart cost dramatically more than one job twice the size.

For a private pond, the practical variables are access, disposal and method.

Mechanical dredging uses an excavator, either from the bank or on a barge or pontoons, to dig material out. Best when the pond can be drained or partially drained, when the material is firm, and when there is somewhere on the property to place the spoil. Usually the cheapest option on a small site.

Hydraulic dredging pumps a slurry of sediment and water through a pipe to a containment area. Works without draining, causes less disturbance, and handles soft silt well. It needs a place to dewater the slurry, which is often the constraint.

The question that decides your price is not which method but where the material goes. Spoil that can be spread on site is nearly free to dispose of. Spoil that has to be dewatered, loaded and trucked to a landfill can cost more than the dredging.

Contaminated sediment

If the sediment is contaminated, the equipment cost stops being the story. PFAS treatment alone adds $133 to $231 per cubic yard, which is 20 to 40 times the cost of the dredging itself on a harbour project.

Contamination brings characterisation sampling before the work, a regulated disposal pathway, water treatment for the return flow, monitoring during the work, and a much longer permitting timeline. Heavy metals, PCBs and hydrocarbons all trigger versions of the same escalation.

The practical advice is to sample early. A sediment characterisation costs a few thousand dollars and determines whether your project is a $30,000 job or a $300,000 one. Finding out after mobilisation is the expensive way.

That gap between a US-built and a China-built dredge of similar nominal size is real and it is not purely a quality difference. US-built vessels working in domestic waters must comply with the Jones Act, which requires US construction, US ownership and a US crew for dredging in US waters. That requirement, plus build standards and labour cost, is most of the difference.

If you are dredging in US waters commercially, the imported dredge may not be legally usable for the work you want it for. Check this before you price anything.

What drives the cost

  • Disposal distance and method. Frequently the largest single factor. Placement on site, nearshore placement, offshore disposal and landfill are four completely different price levels.
  • Material type. Soft silt pumps easily. Stiff clay, compacted sand and rock each escalate the method and the cost.
  • Water depth and access. Shallow water limits dredge size. Restricted access adds mobilisation complexity.
  • Environmental windows. Fish spawning, turtle nesting and bird seasons close work windows in many locations, compressing schedules and raising cost.
  • Permitting. In the US this typically involves the Army Corps of Engineers plus state and sometimes local agencies. Timeline commonly exceeds the construction duration on small projects.
  • Debris. Sunken logs, tyres, concrete and abandoned structures stop production and are rarely in the base quote.

Getting a fair quote

Give the contractor a bathymetric survey if you have one, an estimated volume, a sediment sample result, and a clear statement of where the material can go. Those four items turn a defensive guess into a real number.

Then ask for the quote to separate mobilisation, dredging, dewatering, disposal and permitting support. A single lump sum from two contractors is not comparable, and mobilisation buried inside a per-yard rate is where most of the surprise lives.
