A new reach stacker costs $400,000 to $900,000 depending on capacity, mast reach and specification. The used market is where most buyers actually shop, and verified listings run from $125,000 for a high-hour 2013 machine to $800,000 for a low-hour heavy-duty unit. Export-grade machines sourced through Asia are advertised at $70,000 to $130,000. There is no meaningful daily rental market in the US, though long-term arrangements imply roughly $19,400 a month.

Two entries in that table deserve comment. The 2006 Kalmar at $360,000 costs more than the 2019 SANY at $325,000, which looks backwards until you know that Kalmar machines hold value on rebuild quality and parts availability, and that a 20-year-old European machine with a documented rebuild can be worth more than a newer machine from a brand with a thinner service network in your region. Ask what has been rebuilt and when, not just what year is on the plate.
The export-grade band at $70,000 to $130,000 is real but carries real risk. These are typically machines retired from Asian or Middle Eastern port service, sold FOB, with limited inspection and no warranty. Freight, import duty, commissioning and the first round of repairs commonly add 30 to 50 percent to the landed cost. Some buyers do very well here. Others buy a parts machine.
Why renting one is difficult
Reach stackers are port and intermodal terminal machines, not general construction equipment. General rental yards do not stock them. The machines that exist are almost all working in terminals, on multi-year contracts, and the operators who can run them are trained for the specific site.
What is available instead is long-term lease or rental-purchase through a container handling dealer, usually structured over 12 to 60 months. The implied figure of roughly $19,400 a month is what those arrangements work out to on a mid-spec machine, but it is a negotiated number, not a rate card. If you need a machine for a few weeks, the realistic answer is contracting a terminal service provider rather than renting the machine.
What drives the price
Capacity and reach. The headline spec is usually written as something like 45 tonnes in the first row. What matters as much is capacity in the second and third row, because that falls sharply as the boom extends. A machine rated 45 tonnes in row one may carry only 27 tonnes in row two and 15 tonnes in row three. Compare machines at the row you will actually work in.
Spreader type. Top-lift spreaders for standard containers, or a piggyback and combi spreader for handling trailers and non-standard loads. Empty container handlers are a different and cheaper machine entirely.
Hours. Port machines run hard. Twenty-five thousand hours is a lot of life used. Boom wear, cylinder condition and the spreader twistlocks are where that shows.
Emissions tier. A machine with an older engine tier may be restricted at some ports and in some jurisdictions. Confirm before importing.
Parts and service network. The most underrated cost factor. A cheap machine from a brand with no dealer within 500 miles is expensive the first time a proprietary component fails.
Costs beyond the purchase
- Freight and import. On an overseas machine this is substantial. It is heavy, oversized, and often needs partial disassembly.
- Commissioning. Reassembly, hydraulic recharge, calibration and load testing.
- Tyres. Reach stacker tyres are large and expensive, and a full set is a serious bill.
- Operator training and certification. Required, and site-specific in most terminals.
- Ground bearing. A loaded reach stacker imposes very high point loads. Yards that were not built for it need paving work first.
Getting a fair quote
State your container mix, stacking height, row depth and daily move count. Then ask for the load chart at every row, hours on the machine and on the spreader separately, the engine emissions tier, service history with documentation, and the nearest dealer with parts stock. On an import, ask for the FOB price, the estimated landed cost, and who is responsible if the machine does not run on arrival.
