Chrysler Catalytic Converter Scrap Prices: Mopar Grades and Codes

Chrysler catalytic converters scrap between about $5 and $610 across the Stellantis brands as of 21 August 2026. The workhorse grade is Large Chrysler Cat at $92 each, with a published range of $89–$266, while small domestic and foil units run $18–$161 and identified 6.7 Cummins diesel converters top the family at $410–$610. Where a unit lands depends on the code stamped on the shell and whether the substrate is ceramic or foil.

This page covers how Mopar converters are numbered and graded across Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram. For per-generation values, see the dedicated breakdowns for the Jeep Cherokee and the Dodge Ram.

Mopar grades and what they pay

Chrysler has a named grade of its own in the trade. Rockaway Recycling defines Large Chrysler Cat as OEM units from Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep vehicles, identified by the triangular honeycomb pattern and required to be full of original internal material.

Grade Price each Published range Date
Large Chrysler Cat $92 $89–$266 21 Aug 2026
High Grade Domestic Cat $68 $65–$593 19 Aug 2026
Large Foil/Wire Cat $67 $67–$331 21 Aug 2026
Small Domestic Cat $30 $21–$161 21 Aug 2026
DPF $30 $9–$758 21 Aug 2026
Regular Domestic Cat $20–$136 21 Aug 2026
Small Foil/Wire $18 $18–$78 21 Aug 2026
Diesel Cat $15 $15–$477 21 Aug 2026
Foil/Wire Pre $15–$76 21 Aug 2026
Aftermarket Cat $5 21 Aug 2026

For reference, the national average across all converter types was $101 each on 21 August 2026. A typical Mopar ceramic unit sits close to that average. This is a mid-tier family, not a premium one.

Brand-level indices tell a different story and should be handled carefully. ScrapMonster listed a Jeep category at $178 on 17 August 2026, with domestic high grade at $166, domestic XL at $250, domestic regular at $75, domestic low grade at $40, aftermarket at $17 and diesel at $13. Those run higher than Rockaway grade prices for comparable units. The gap between the two publishers is roughly your negotiating room.

How Mopar converters are numbered

There is no single Chrysler serial format. Which one you see depends on brand and era. That is the main reason Mopar units get misgraded.

Chrysler-format codes

RRCats documents Chrysler converters as carrying the Chrysler logo followed by a short alphanumeric string. Published examples are 209W, 557AAA, 471AAW, 080W and 071AA. The pattern runs roughly four to six characters, mixing digits and letters, usually with the digits leading and letters trailing. Some Chrysler units carry no logo at all and can only be identified from photographs.

Jeep prefixes

Jeep units are the easiest of the family to spot because the prefixes are consistent. RRCats lists 520, 680, YK, EGR and RL as the codes to hunt for. Units may also be stamped outright with JEEP, MOPAR or FCA, or simply carry a Chrysler part number with no brand marking.

Dodge and Ram codes

Dodge and Ram diesel units use a longer numeric-plus-suffix format. Documented examples include 2196ABP and 2198AAP. The pattern is four digits followed by a two or three letter suffix, and the suffix matters: 2196AAP and 2196ABP are different parts with a published price gap of roughly $200. Never read the digits and ignore the letters.

Newer combination assemblies break the pattern entirely, running long codes such as 023AA66367A, 0430200AC and 930AA66367A.

Where to look on the shell

  • The side of the can. Dodge numbers are typically marked on the side and easy to find when not corroded.
  • The corners and edges. Chrysler triangle stampings and serials often sit near the edges.
  • Under the heat shields. Numbers are frequently hidden beneath shielding.
  • The down pipe. Worth checking when the can itself is blank.

Not every Mopar converter carries a number. When there is none, buyers grade from photographs of the exterior and the internal honeycomb.

Ceramic versus foil: the Mopar split

This is the most important grading distinction in the family, and it is worth more than the model badge.

Chrysler-family ceramic units show a triangular honeycomb pattern inside. Other manufacturers typically use a checkered pattern. That triangle is the fastest confirmation you are holding a genuine Mopar OEM ceramic unit.

But many Chrysler-family vehicles use foil cats, holding precious metal on metal foil rather than a ceramic brick. RRCats describes a swirl pattern and notes these are harder to refine and potentially undervalued against ceramic OEM units. Rockaway describes the same construction as layered metal mesh resembling a spiralled thumbprint.

A ceramic unit grading as Large Chrysler starts at $89. A comparable small foil unit starts at $18. Same brand, same era, similar size can, five to one on payout.

Substrate Visual cue Grade it falls into Range
Ceramic, large Triangular honeycomb brick Large Chrysler Cat $89–$266
Ceramic, small Honeycomb, small can Small Domestic Cat $21–$161
Foil, large Spiralled wire mesh, thumbprint look Large Foil/Wire Cat $67–$331
Foil, small Swirl pattern, light weight Small Foil/Wire $18–$78
Foil pre-cat Small foil unit near manifold Foil/Wire Pre $15–$76
Aftermarket No OEM stamp, thin shell Aftermarket Cat $5

Diesel grading across the family

Mopar diesel exhaust is graded in sections, not as an assembly. Three components are treated separately.

  • Diesel oxidation catalyst. Upstream, with temperature sensors. Platinum-heavy. This is the section carrying most of the recoverable value.
  • Diesel particulate filter. Identified by differential-pressure tubes and visible ceramic construction. Traps soot physically rather than by chemical reaction, so it may carry little to no recoverable precious metal.
  • Selective catalytic reduction. Downstream, with NOx sensors, a mixer section and diesel exhaust fluid injection. Some specialist recyclers do not buy SCR at all.

Two rules follow. Gasoline three-way converters carry platinum, palladium and rhodium together, while diesel units lean on platinum and carry negligible rhodium, so gasoline units gain far more when rhodium runs high. And weight is a poor proxy for value, because steel housings, insulation and filter mass dominate total weight. A small high-grade gasoline converter can outpay a much larger diesel unit.

How metal prices flow into Mopar quotes

Metal 20 Jan 2026 19–20 Aug 2026 Where it matters
Platinum $2,346/oz $1,793/oz Diesel DOC units
Palladium $1,864/oz $1,299/oz Gasoline three-way units
Rhodium $10,100/oz $8,550–$8,800/oz Gasoline only

The rhodium figure is a live disagreement between sources rather than an estimate. Kitco quoted $8,550 on 19 August 2026. Trading Economics quoted $8,800 on 20 August 2026, describing rhodium as up 7.32 percent on the month and 17.73 percent on the year. Both are reported rather than averaged.

A wider conflict exists in the trade press. JunkyardInventory cites 2026 rhodium at $4,800 per ounce and palladium at $950, figures far below both exchange sources above. Anyone quoting you from numbers that low is working from bad data.

For converting spot to expected payout, IndexBox reports that sellers typically receive 25 to 35 percent of the contained metal spot value after refining costs and losses, with professional refining recovering 92 to 98 percent of the platinum group metals. Metals Focus forecast platinum averaging $1,670 across 2026 and palladium easing toward $1,150 by the fourth quarter, so further softening in gasoline grades is plausible.

Practical selling notes

  • Photograph the stamp and the honeycomb. Every buyer surveyed quotes from photographs plus serial numbers.
  • Keep the internals intact. Large Chrysler Cat grading explicitly requires the unit be full of original material.
  • Wire-brush the code before quoting. On diesel units this is worth hundreds of dollars.
  • Split diesel assemblies by section. A whole exhaust quoted as one lump gets priced at filter rates.
  • Get more than one quote. Published grade prices and brand indices differ by wide margins.
  • Bring proof of ownership. Buyers surveyed require it before payment.
