No modern bucket wheel excavator has a disclosed sale price, so there is no current figure to give you. Relocating Bagger 288 across 22 kilometres in 2001 cost 15 million Deutsche marks. The machines span an enormous range: compact units run a 6 metre boom at 100 cubic metres an hour, while the largest run an 80 metre boom at 12,500 cubic metres an hour.

Be careful with the $100 million figure, because it gets quoted as though it were current. Bagger 288 was built in 1978. A hundred million 1978 dollars is worth several times that today. Anyone telling you a modern bucket wheel excavator costs $100 million is repeating a nearly fifty-year-old number without adjusting it.
Why there is no modern price
Bucket wheel excavators are built for continuous surface mining, overwhelmingly lignite and brown coal, and overwhelmingly in a small number of countries. Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, Serbia, Greece, Australia and India account for most of the world fleet. New builds are rare, they are engineered to a specific mine, and the buyers are state or near-state utilities and mining companies that do not publish procurement figures.
There is also no used market to speak of. A bucket wheel excavator is not moved between owners. It is built on a mine, works there for decades, and is either relocated within the same operation or cut up when the field closes.
Relocation is the number worth knowing
The 2001 move of Bagger 288 is one of the very few verifiable cost figures in this field. The machine walked 22 kilometres from the Hambach mine to Garzweiler over three weeks at about 0.6 kilometres an hour, crossing a road, a rail line and a river along the way. It cost 15 million Deutsche marks.
That was cheaper than dismantling and rebuilding, which is why they did it, and it tells you something useful about the category: moving one of these machines a short distance costs what a fleet of large excavators costs outright.
The size range is the real story
Most people searching for this cost are picturing Bagger 288. The category is much wider than that.
Compact bucket wheel excavators with a 6 metre boom moving 100 cubic metres an hour are used for stockpile reclaiming, sand and gravel, and smaller mining operations. These are industrial machines in the range of ordinary heavy equipment, not wonders of engineering, and they are bought and sold with real prices from manufacturers.
Mid-size machines serve smaller lignite operations and large aggregate operations.
The largest class, with an 80 metre boom and 12,500 cubic metres an hour, is a handful of machines worldwide, each effectively a one-off civil engineering project.
If your interest is practical rather than curiosity, the compact and mid classes are where a purchase conversation is actually possible.
What drives the cost
Wheel diameter and bucket count. These set the output rate and the structural load, which set everything else.
Boom length and reach. A longer boom means a taller working face and a heavier counterweight structure.
Conveyor system. A bucket wheel excavator on its own is only half a system. It feeds a continuous conveyor network and often a spreader at the dump end. The conveyor infrastructure is a large capital cost in its own right and is the reason the method only pays at very high throughput.
Electrical supply. These are electric machines drawing very large power over trailing cables.
Ground conditions. Bucket wheels cut soft material. Hard rock or heavy inclusions damage them, which is why the method is essentially confined to lignite, sand, clay and soft overburden.
When the method makes sense
Continuous surface mining with a bucket wheel excavator and conveyors beats truck and shovel on operating cost per cubic metre at very high volumes in soft material, and it does so without a haul truck fleet or a fuel bill. The capital cost and the inflexibility are the trade. The machine digs where the conveyor reaches, and moving the conveyor is a project.
Against that, a truck and shovel operation costs less to start, adapts to a changing pit, and handles harder material. Almost every mine that could use a bucket wheel excavator has already made this decision decades ago, which is part of why so few new ones get built.
Getting a real number
For a compact or mid-size machine, go to the manufacturers of continuous surface mining equipment with your material, throughput target and face geometry, and you will get a quote. For the largest class, the honest answer is that the price is negotiated inside a mine development project and no published figure exists.
