No public price exists for an electric rope shovel, new or used. Every manufacturer sells them quote-only, every used listing says negotiable, and no auction result for a current-generation machine is published. Any site giving you a confident dollar figure has invented it. What can be documented is the specification and the scale of the erection effort: a Cat 7495 HD runs a 36 to 79 cubic yard dipper with a 90 short ton payload, a P&H 4100XPC runs 69 to 82 cubic yards at 120 short tons, the 4800XPC carries 135 short tons, and site erection of a large shovel takes roughly 47,711 man-hours.

That erection figure is worth sitting with. Forty-seven thousand man-hours is roughly 24 person-years of labour, spent assembling one machine on one site before it moves a single bucket. Erection alone is a multi-million dollar project with a crane fleet, a specialist crew and a schedule measured in months. Any price you eventually get quoted for the machine is only part of what it costs to have one working.
Why the price is not public
Three reasons, and they compound.
Every machine is configured. Dipper size, boom length, crowd system, drive package, electrical supply voltage and control system are specified against the pit, the material density and the truck fleet it will load. There is no standard machine to price.
The buyer list is tiny. A handful of global mining companies buy these. Deals are negotiated with service agreements, parts packages, availability guarantees and sometimes performance clauses bundled in. Publishing a price would only weaken the seller in the next negotiation.
The used market barely exists. A rope shovel that comes out of service is usually either relocated within the same company or stripped. When one is listed, it is listed negotiable, because condition, remaining structural life and whether the machine is still standing or already disassembled change the value enormously.
What the specifications tell you
Since price is unavailable, specification is how these machines get compared.
Payload. The 4100XPC at 120 short tons and the 4800XPC at 135 short tons are sized to fill ultra-class haul trucks in three or four passes. Pass matching is the whole point. A shovel that fills a truck in three passes rather than four moves materially more material per shift with the same fleet.
Dipper capacity against material density. The Cat 7495 HD spread of 36 to 79 cubic yards is not a range of machines, it is the range of dippers you can hang on one machine depending on what you are digging. Dense ore needs a smaller dipper at the same payload. Light overburden takes the big one.
Duty class. HD in a model designation means heavy duty, built for harder digging and higher availability requirements.
The costs around the machine
- Electrical infrastructure. Rope shovels are electric and draw very large power. A substation, distribution and a trailing cable system are usually a separate project.
- Erection. The 47,711 man-hour figure above, plus heavy lift cranes on site for months.
- Wear parts. Dipper teeth, lip shrouds, wear plates and ropes are continuous consumables at high tonnage.
- Availability contracts. Most operators buy a service agreement with the machine. That recurring cost is part of the real economics and is often negotiated alongside the purchase.
- Relocation. Moving a shovel within a pit is routine. Moving it between sites means substantial disassembly and re-erection.
Rope shovel or hydraulic excavator
This is the decision most mines are actually making, and unlike the price, it can be reasoned about openly.
Electric rope shovels have a lower operating cost per tonne at very high volumes, a long service life measured in decades, and no diesel bill. They need grid power, they are effectively immobile, and the capital and erection commitment is enormous.
Large hydraulic mining excavators cost less to buy, arrive far faster, can be moved between pits, and do not need a substation. They cost more per tonne moved at scale and have a shorter life.
The crossover is production volume and mine life. A pit with 25 years of reserve and a large truck fleet favours the shovel. A pit with 8 years, or one that needs flexibility in where it digs, favours hydraulics.
Getting a real number
You will get one only by going to the manufacturer with a specification: annual tonnage, material density and diggability, truck fleet and target passes, available supply voltage, and mine life. Ask for the quote to separate machine, erection, electrical infrastructure and the service agreement, because a single bundled figure from two vendors is not comparable.
If you are researching rather than buying, the useful and honest answer is that this is a nine-figure commitment once erection and infrastructure are counted, and that nobody publishes the machine price on its own.
