The Big Muskie numbers are the most instructive line in that table. A machine that cost the equivalent of $219 million to build was worth $700,000 as scrap thirty years later. A dragline has essentially no resale market. It is built for one mine, walks nowhere far, and when the mine closes the machine is either recommissioned at enormous cost for another site or cut up. That asymmetry is the whole economics of the machine.

Why nobody publishes a price

Draglines are engineered to order. Boom length, bucket capacity, tub diameter, electrical supply and control system are specified against a particular pit geometry and overburden. Two mines ordering the same nominal model get different machines. The order is a capital project with an engineering phase, and there is no configuration a manufacturer could put a number against in advance.

The $100 million to $150 million band is what the industry works with for planning. Treat it as a planning figure and nothing more.

Recommissioning is the real market

With around 450 machines in service and very few new builds, most dragline transactions are not purchases. They are the recommissioning of a machine that has been sitting at a closed or idled mine. Documented projects have run $28.7 million to $31 million, and one relocation and commissioning project came in around $31 million.

That is 20 to 30 percent of a new build, and it is why an operator with a pit that suits a dragline will look hard at idle machines before ordering anything. The catch is that a mothballed dragline degrades. Electrical systems, ropes, bearings and the tub structure all need assessment, and the difference between a machine that has been maintained in layup and one that has simply been abandoned is millions of dollars.

Small draglines are a different machine

If you searched for dragline cost and expected a five-figure answer, you were probably thinking of a crawler-mounted cable dragline, the kind used for pond dredging, canal cleaning, sand and gravel work and marine construction. Those are used-market machines, often decades old, listed at $30,000 to $195,900.

They share a name and a working principle with mining draglines and share nothing else. A crawler dragline runs a bucket of a few cubic yards. A large walking dragline runs a bucket of 80 to 160 cubic yards and weighs thousands of tonnes. Do not use figures from one to reason about the other.

What drives the cost of a large machine

Bucket capacity and boom length. The two headline numbers, and the primary drivers of structural mass and cost.

Electrical supply. Draglines are electric and draw enormous power. A site frequently needs new transmission infrastructure, a substation and a trailing cable system. On a remote pit that can be a significant fraction of the machine cost again.

Erection. A dragline is assembled on site over many months by a specialist crew. Erection is a major project in its own right, not a delivery.

Control system. Modern digital drive and control systems, operator assist and monitoring add capability and cost, and are the most common upgrade during a recommission.

Why anyone pays this

Draglines exist because at very large scale they are the cheapest way on earth to move overburden. A machine that runs continuously for decades with a small crew and no haul trucks has an operating cost per cubic yard that truck and shovel fleets cannot approach. The capital number is enormous and the cost per unit moved is very low.

That only works with a reserve large enough and a pit geometry suitable enough to keep the machine working for 20 or 30 years. Outside that case, the machine is the wrong answer regardless of price.

Getting a fair number

For a large machine, this is a capital project. You will engage the manufacturer, an owner’s engineer, and probably a consultant who has recommissioned one before. Nothing published will substitute for that. Ask early about power supply cost, erection duration, and what the residual value assumption is in your financial model, because the honest answer to residual is close to scrap.

For a small crawler dragline, treat it like any used machine purchase: inspect the boom, the ropes, the drums, the clutches and the undercarriage, and confirm parts availability for a machine that may be forty years old.
